Lucas (age 6) and Ethan (age 9) Furman

From Mom (Amelia) about this piece:

I asked Ethan what verse has helped him during this time and he quickly said "John 3:16" and quoted it back to me. I pushed him to come up with something a little less "cliche" but he was adamant that this is the verse that has aided him most. I realized that his choice was perfect in it's simplicity. Because of what Jesus did for us on the cross, we can deal with any circumstance and any emotional roller coaster (symbolized by the colored drawings). If we take to meditating on this verse, our love for God strengthens, our prejudices and biases diminish (He love the whole world...) and we are given hope for a very, very bright future no matter what we face today.

I
have dealt with anxiety and depression for most of my adult life. During this season of upheaval in the world, my mental health has been up and down more than usual (and I'm sure many of you can relate). This verse has meant a lot to me in difficult and dark times, because even though I may feel darkness pressing in around me, I know that in God
there is only light. Darkness may be very present in the world we live in now, but Jesus is ever-present with me as well. In him there is no darkness at all. I trust that light, and know that it will eventually
prevail in every way, even when I can't see it or feel it. I know a day is coming where there will be no more darkness inside or out, and that hope gets me through a lot of hard days right now.

I Cor. 3:7 has been has been such an
encouragement to me during this time.  This verse, coupled with the reappearing of life during spring has been a constant reminder of God's singular hand in causing growth.  It reminds me of His quiet, steady presence that is responsible for coaxing buds and tender leaves to shoot from hardened branches and dead remnants from past seasons.  He is also
responsible for growth that occurs during this difficult time.  Just as we can confidently expect God to work His magic each spring, we can
hope and trust that He will also deepen, broaden and richly grow our hearts and lives during this time.

When I read this verse during my morning
devotional, I was taken back to Mallorca, a Spanish island I visited at the end of last summer. I was sitting on an empty rocky cliff, looking off to the endless Mediterranean sea. The water and the sky were both such a beautiful deep shade of blue that it seemed as though I was looking at the world around me through a photo filter. The most
magnificent part of it all, however, was the sound of the waves hitting the rocks beneath me. So powerful, so strong, so terrifying. I felt so
small, weak and helpless compared to the strength of the waves. On the other hand, there was this strange sense of peace about the whole situation. In a way, that thundering noise combined with the majestic strength created a feeling of humility within me, as if every worry was so insignificant in that moment. And just like that the Lord is even mightier, even stronger, and even louder than the sound of the waves. He is powerful, strong, and terrifying just as much as he is peaceful, tender, and calming. Our God is a great God. He is stronger than any
over-bearing circumstances and greater than our deepest fears.
